Little Sahara – Ocean, Nature & Desert near Agadir
A 4x4 day trip to explore a mini-desert near Agadir, taking in the Atlantic Ocean, wild landscapes, fishing villages, and the scenery of the South. The excursion begins at the Oued Souss, where you can spot migratory birds, before visiting an artisanal pottery workshop [optional stop] and the fishing village of Tifnit. A track stretching roughly twenty kilometers between Tifnit and Sidi R’bat leads you through rugged terrain to the mouth of the Oued Massa. Along the way, if you are lucky, you may also encounter the Northern Bald Ibis—a rare and endangered species that is emblematic of the Souss-Massa region.
The route continues to the Youssef Ben Tachfine Dam, with a photo stop to admire the magnificent panorama. Next, a delicious Berber tagine awaits you at a local home for an authentic culinary break, before heading to the Rasmouka dunes, known as the "Little Sahara." The day concludes in Tiznit, a town renowned for its craftsmanship and silver jewelry.

We continue on the southern road and take the deviation to the right towards the fishing village of Tifnit, {demolished by the authorities at the beginning of 2024 for cause, Construction in the maritime domain without a permit} … Photo stop and a short walk on the beach to appreciate nature, the small motor boats and the fish, then we continue towards the village of Sidi Rbat, via a sand track along the wild Atlantic coast... (20km & 2 hours from track).
These troglodyte houses provide shelter for fishermen, allowing them to stay for a few days by the ocean, fish and keep their gear and belongings with them, then leave once a week to see their families in the village beyond...

We cross the village of Sidi Rbat to descend to the mouth of Oued Massa, to find a beautiful lagoon where Oued Massa meets the Atlantic Ocean, part of the Souss Massa National Park. A favorite spot for many species of migratory birds and the last refuge of the bald ibis, the mouth of oued massa generously offers this greenery in the middle of a desert landscape, making for a beautiful contrast.
The Estuary of Oued Massa has been on the Ramsar list since January 2005, located on one of the main migration routes for water birds, and this because of the role it plays in the conservation of biodiversity in general and waterfowl in particular.
The "RAMSAR" Convention on Wetlands of International Importance, is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands aimed at halting the degradation and loss of wetlands, now and in the future, by recognizing the functions fundamental ecological values of these, as well as economic, cultural, scientific and recreational values.
After that, we head down to the Berber village, do a bit of trail riding, and a well-deserved reward awaits us. After a typical Berber lunch and a tea break, the adventure continues...
Tiznit, 100 km south of Agadir, a small town surrounded by 6 km of ramparts. Known in Morocco for its craftsmen who make silver jewelry, we visit a Silver Jewelry Factory (optional stopover), to discover the work of the jewelry craftsmen, and a short tour of the walls and interior of the Medina by car, before returning quietly to Agadir.
